TLDR: Safety isn't just a nice thing to have in a healing session. It is the thing. Without it, growth is neurologically impossible. This post breaks down what complete safety actually looks like in a Cuddlist session, why you never have to explain your trauma, and what becomes possible when your nervous system finally gets to exhale.

In Episode 2 of Finding Ourself: A Heartfelt Cuddlist Podcast, Cuddlist co-owners Keeley Shoop   and Michelle Renee  sat down with Clarissa , a Cuddlist practitioner in Santa Cruz who has been doing this work since 2017. She said something early in the conversation that has stayed with everyone who heard it.

"We can't grow unless we feel safe. Because growing is an act of vulnerability. It's like the most vulnerable part of the plant is where you'll see a sprout come out." 

Most of us have spent years trying to heal in environments that weren't actually safe. Not because anyone meant harm, but because the kind of safety that allows real growth, the kind that reaches past the physical into the emotional, intellectual, and spiritual, is genuinely rare. 

What Does "Complete Safety" Actually Mean? 

Clarissa describes her goal in every session as complete safety. Not just physical safety, but the sense that all of you is welcome. Your confusion. Your mess. Your unexpected feelings. The parts of yourself you have been keeping hidden for years. 

Her path to this work was not obvious. After a decade in Homeland Security, a world she describes as "soul crushing" and "answering the call of my conditioning," she dove into years of study in classical Tantra, interpersonal neurobiology, internal family systems, and compassionate inquiry. What emerged from all of that was a very clear practice philosophy: people already have the answers inside them. They just need a safe enough space to let those answers surface. 

That is not a metaphor. It is how the nervous system works. 

Why Cuddlist Practitioners Don't Use the Word "Healer" 

Both Clarissa and Michelle have always had a complicated relationship with the word "healer," and the conversation in this episode explores why. 

"Healer" carries an implicit assumption: that something is broken and someone else is going to fix it. That is not what happens in a Cuddlist session. 

What Cuddlist practitioners do is show up as full human beings in the room with the client. They hold space for who the client already is. Because you are not broken. You may be carrying things that feel unbearable. You may be disconnected from your own body or your own needs. But none of that means something is fundamentally wrong with you. 

It means you have not yet had the safety to be yourself. That can change. 

If you have a trauma history and you are wondering whether this work is for you, here is something important to know: you never have to tell the story. 

Michelle has a client she saw years ago with a significant trauma background. His therapist's only instruction, passed through the client, was: don't talk about it. And it was not needed. Over time, he did open up and share more, but it happened at his pace, in his own time, entirely client-led. 

Keeley shared a similar story about one of her own long-standing clients, someone who came to her deep in addiction and crisis. Three years later, two years sober, living independently, building a life he is proud of. They never once worked directly with the trauma. He was a no to that, and she never pushed it. 

What both stories illustrate is that a practitioner never actually needs to know what happened. The nervous system does not need a narrative to begin releasing what it is holding. It needs safety. It needs presence. It needs time. 

Clarissa, drawing on her background in interpersonal neurobiology, put it simply: the Western therapeutic model is very focused on conceptualizing and narrating our experience. But healing often happens beneath language. The body can access things that words simply cannot reach. 

That is what client-led work actually looks like. 

Clarissa mentioned that about twenty percent of her clients are themselves therapists. Others come simply because they are touch-starved. Some are working to untangle physical intimacy, emotional intimacy, and sexual intimacy, which in our culture often get bundled together in ways that create real suffering. 

Some clients come primarily for what Clarissa calls co-regulation. They want to feel a warm, safe body nearby. They want the baseline reassurance that another human being can offer. That is a completely legitimate reason to come. It is enough. 

Others come because something has shifted and they know, even if they cannot fully name it yet, that they are ready for something different. 

But wherever you are, you do not need a referral, a diagnosis, or a reason beyond being a human being who could use some presence. There is no prerequisite level of brokenness required. 

One of the most striking things to emerge from this conversation is how far the effects of this work reach. 

Michelle shared a story about a client who comes to see her for one hour, once a month. He told her that after their sessions, people open up to him more. He walks through the world differently. He receives more connection from the people in his life, simply because of how he is showing up. 

As Clarissa put it, what practitioners are doing at its core is making the unconscious conscious. And as that happens, it ripples. The people around a client begin to respond differently. The way someone relates to their children, their partner, their colleagues shifts. The healing has a snowball effect, just as trauma can have a snowball effect, but in the other direction. 

Both Keeley and Michelle spoke to feeling this in their own lives. This work changes how people show up in every room they walk into. That is not something either of them takes lightly.
